The Vaal Dam spans the Gauteng, Free State and Mpumalanga boundaries and is South Africa’s best-known inland watersports destination.
The Vaal has no single gate. Dozens of resorts, yacht clubs and municipal areas ring the shoreline, each with its own day rate, and the Department of Water and Sanitation administers the water body itself. There is no such thing as one Vaal Dam entrance fee.
How Dam Access Is Usually Charged in South Africa
Access to a South African dam is rarely one fee. Four separate things are commonly charged, and confusing them is why quoted prices vary so widely:
- Shore access at a municipal recreation area — often free, sometimes a small per-vehicle charge
- Resorts and caravan parks on the dam — their own day-visitor gate fee, unrelated to the dam itself
- Boat launch permits — issued by the municipality or the Department of Water and Sanitation, charged per craft
- Fishing permits — separate again, and required at many dams
A price you are quoted for “the dam” is usually one of these four, not all of them.
What to Ask Before You Go
- Is there a charge for shore access, and is it per person or per vehicle?
- Are you entering through a resort rather than a public area, and what is that resort’s day rate?
- Do you need a launch permit for a boat, jet ski or canoe?
- Do you need a fishing permit, and where is it issued?
