How Dam Access Is Usually Charged in South Africa
Access to a South African dam is rarely one fee. Four separate things are commonly charged, and confusing them is why quoted prices vary so widely:
- Shore access at a municipal recreation area — often free, sometimes a small per-vehicle charge
- Resorts and caravan parks on the dam — their own day-visitor gate fee, unrelated to the dam itself
- Boat launch permits — issued by the municipality or the Department of Water and Sanitation, charged per craft
- Fishing permits — separate again, and required at many dams
A price you are quoted for “the dam” is usually one of these four, not all of them.
