Zoo Lake Is Not Johannesburg Zoo
This is the most common confusion, and it is an expensive one to get wrong. Zoo Lake is a free public park across the road from Johannesburg Zoo, which is a separate ticketed attraction. The two share a name and a neighbourhood but not a gate or a price.

What Costs Money at Zoo Lake
Entry, the lawns, the walking paths and the picnic areas are free. Paddle boat hire on the lake is paid, and boat operators have historically taken cash only — bring some if you intend to go on the water.
Events Are Different
Zoo Lake regularly hosts ticketed events, markets and concerts on its grounds. A ticket for one of those is not an entrance fee for the park, and the park remains free on ordinary days.
